Cat insurance policies and types of cover

There are various types of pet cat insurance policy with different levels of cover to choose from. It’s important to choose sufficient cover for your pet based on your combined needs. Cat & kitten insurance premiums will vary taking into account age, species/breed, and whether there are any pre-existing medical conditions.

Be aware of the policy excess, limitations and exclusions. The main 4 types of policy & cover are:

Lifetime Pet Cover

Lifetime cover, provides the most comprehensive cover for your cat, protecting against illness and injury throughout their life.

Lifetime policies offer peace of mind should your cat develop ongoing or chronic illnesses.

A lifetime policy will continue to provide year on year, as long as the policy is renewed.

Time Limited Pet Cover

Annual, or time limited insurance typically covers your cat for illnesses & injuries for a period of one year. After which the policy can be renewed, however at renewal existing medical conditions may be excluded.

These policies do not provide the best cover for lengthy treatments, they will not cover chronic conditions requiring year on year treatment.

Accident Only Pet Cover

Accident only is usually the cheapest pet insurance option. Accident cover tends to only cover accidental injuries things like broken bones, cuts, poisoning are often covered.

Policies would not cover sickness, diseases (e.g. things like cancer or congenital illness).

Maximum Benefit Pet Cover

Provides cover for accidents, injury & diseases. Claims are subject to value limits, rather than time limited cover.

With maximum benefit insurance, you can continue to claim for a condition until the limit/claim cover value is exhausted.

Things cat insurance should cover

The type of policy and cover will determine the cover provided. Always thoroughly check the policy documents, these should provide full details of the insurance cover provided as well as listing any exclusions.

The most common risks a cat insurance policy will cover include.

  • Vets bills for accidents & illnesses
  • Theft or missing pet cover
  • Overnight vet stays
  • Third party liability
  • Death & euthanasia
  • Taking your cat on holiday

Things cat insurance does not usually cover

Different cat insurance policy’s provide different levels of cover. Exclusions depend on the individual policy however as a general rule a basic cat insurance policy will not cover:

  • Pre-existing conditions (any pre-known illnesses or diseases)
  • Hereditary breed specific conditions
  • Routine treatments vaccinations, flea & worm treatment
  • Elected care and surgery (neutering, spaying, worming dental checks)
  • Pregnancy health care

Cat insurance FAQs

Cat insurance varies depending on the type of policy, the levels of cover and take into account specific details about your cat like its age, breed, general health and whether there are any pre-existing conditions. You can get basic cat insurance cover from just £3.35.

Comprehensive ‘Lifetime’ cat insurance policies are more expensive.

In order to get an accurate pet insurance quote most pet insurance providers will require some basic information.

It is important that you are honest about previous illnesses and treatments,  failing to provide accurate information may invalidate your insurance cover.

Typical information you will need to provide includes:

  • The age of your pet
  • Its breed and size
  • Its current health and any previous medical history
  • Its behavioural history
  • How much you paid for it, if you purchased rather than re-homed or adopted it.

Our pets are extremely important to us. Vets fee’s can be unexpected and expensive, getting your dogs, cats and other pets insured provides peace of mind if they become ill or are injured in an accident you will be covered for costly vets bills.

Pet insurance policies vary greatly and the level/value of cover provided will affect the monthly premium you pay. Comparing a selection of pet insurance providers and different policies helps you find the best pet insurance for your pets, saving you time and money.

You can see if you are able to get cheaper cat insurance by comparing the market. You can also take simple steps to cut the cost of cat insurance premiums by:

  • Shopping around

Use a comparison provider to quickly find the best insurance deals.

  • Taking multi-pet cover

If you have more than one cat and other pets like dogs you can add them on a multi-pet policy this is usually cheaper than taking individual insurance out for each pet.

  • Adjusting your voluntary excess

Increase your excess, elect to pay a higher excess per claim you can lower the monthly or annual premium.

  • Paying the full premium

Pay your premium in advance annually, rather than monthly. You can usually get a good discount if you are able to pay all in one go.

  • Neutering your pets

Get your pets neutered. Spaying or neutering your pets reduces the risk that they will develop some diseases or illnesses. This will decrease the risk associated with your pets and help lower premiums.
